Heath Farm Suffolk, (Countryside Alliance Local Food and Drink Award Champions for The East of England) in the heart of the Suffolk countryside producing rare/native breed meat from happy healthy livestock that are allowed to roam.
We are passionate about what we do at Heath Farm, and believe in using old traditional heritage breeds, reared as they should be to produce the best tasting meat.
Heath Farm started its vision and dream the spring of 2012, in the lovely Suffolk village of Hessett, 5 miles east of Bury St. Edmunds, where we rented the original 12 acres and a disused piggery.
Heath Farm now grazes over 100 acres around the villages of Hessett, Rougham and Bradfield St. George many of the acres we graze are on the Higher Level (HLS) and Entry Level (ELS) of Natural England’s Environmental Stewardship Scheme, which is an agri-environment scheme run by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in England which aims to secure widespread environmental benefits.
The ELS aims to:
- Improve water quality and reduce soil erosion – by encouraging management which can help to meet these aims;
- Improve conditions for farmland wildlife – including birds, mammals, butterflies and bees;
- Maintain and enhance landscape character – by helping to maintain important features such as traditional field boundaries;
- Protect the historic environment – including archaeological features and artefacts.
Katie Mitcham-Henry and Mike Phillips run the farm in partnership using traditional husbandry methods to rear native rare breeds in a natural, ethical and sustainable manner with passion and love. Free to roam and pasture fed. We have total traceability. For instance all the haylage and corn we use for winter feed is sourced from the pastures we graze and from neighbouring farms.
We don’t use routine antibiotics or vaccinations. Our meat is dry hung and we don’t use or believe in using weight boosting water injections. Each animal is treated as an individual and they are ready when they are ready, reared slowly, never pushed.
We keep it very simple, and pride ourselves in the quality of what we produce our meat speaks for itself.
Our herds of Oxford Sandy and Black pigs, and English Longhorns are pedigee stock, we are members of The Longhorn Society producing the finest Longhorn Beef.
We butcher all our own meat, selling direct to the customer from our Farm Shop and Butchery. So you thr consumer can truly know where your food comes from.
All our meat is born and raise on our farm insuring 100% provenance.
